TICO BULL – For the first time in his 100 days in office, President Luis Guillermo Solís, ran to avoid questions from the press. And for good reason, don’t you think?
Just in the past week he has had to distance himself (fire) from the man who put him in power, Ivan Barrantes, who was forced out by the man who made way for Luis Guillermo to be president.
Now, there is yet another problem with another man in his inner circle, his ministro de la Presidencia, Melvin Jiménez, who is alleged to paid party insiders to destabilize the leader of the PAC. And course, the constitutionality of Jiménez in office is till up the air.
In both cases Ottón Solís, the man who would be president, has been force behind it all. In the name of “proper ethica conduct”, Solís has begun to question the people closest to the President. Solís says that he still believes in his president, not so much of the people around him.
Then last night (Thursday) a group of protestors outside his home in Barrio Escalante turned a peaceful demonstration into a confrontation with police, with the detention of 25 people who claim the President has been lied to by his Housing minister. Again, the President himself is not under attack, rather someone appointed by him.
All the protestors want is decent housing.
In putting pen to his first 100 days in office, Don Guillermo has been warned that if he intends to focus his attention by attacking her government, Doña Laura has her fingers on the launch codes.
In an article Thursday in La Republica, former president Laura Chinchilla (2010-2014) made it clear, that she or the PLN party will sit idle by if attacked.
Only a few short months ago I would see a happy and jovial face. He was upbeat, his reactions off the cuff. He even sweet talked Intel into setting up a new lab to replace the moving out of its factory. In New York, he hammed up with the press. We saw him, against the advice of his security detail, among the people, celebrating the triumphs of La Sele.
But, in the last couple of days I see a different face.
He ‘no da look so yappy no more!’
And it’s a long way to May 8, 2018.
